24 years ago, 10 Maasai women came together under a sacred osiki tree in a remote village in northern Tanzania to discuss how they could improve their lives. They had been denied education and were frustrated that their culture forbade them to speak publicly about important issues that affected them. Today PWC runs programs to enhance the ability of pastoralist women to claim their rights, to improve access to quality and inclusive education, to improve women’s health, to facilitate clean water, to adapt to climate change and to economically empower women in their community. Pastoral Women’s Council has been a PFE partner since 2021.
